Taylor Dayne interview

From San Diego Gay and Lesbian News:

PALM SPRINGS -- It was a bit of a surreal moment the other day, listening to Taylor Dayne politely give directions to a lost tourist at Disneyworld as we were talking over the phone.

The poor lost woman had inadvertently interrupted our interview and without missing a beat, Taylor promptly pointed her in the right direction towards the Epcot Center, where she had just finished her run through in preparation for her performance there later that night.

“Sorry about that, now where were we,” she asked me, multitasking with aplomb.

You could tell she was used to the hectic life of an entertainer.

As well she ought to, after a career in the music business that spans over two decades. It’s hard to believe it has been 20 years since “Tell It To My Heart” ruled the airwaves; yet with 75 million singles and records sold worldwide under her belt (including 17 Top Ten singles on Billboard charts), Taylor Dayne is still wowing her fans with her incomparable voice.

She’s also enjoyed a vibrant career that has spanned Broadway, radio, film and television as well.

Despite all the demands of being a world class entertainer and a single mother with twins, Taylor still finds time to lend her voice to worthy charitable events such as the upcoming 2010 Palm Springs Equality Awards.

Which is the very reason why I had the pleasure to speak with her in anticipation of her performance in Palm Spring on Oct. 23 at the EQCA event.

We talked about her recent Gay Games performance in Cologne, Germany, this past summer, gay audiences, her musical influences, and a little politics for good measure.

How big of an honor was having “Facing A Miracle” chosen as the theme song for the Cologne Gay Games?

Taylor Dayne: Well it’s two fold. That song, the songwriters, went through a process of going through producers for a song contest for it. Then they went out to procure the talent to perform it and that was me. So that was quite an honor. I was like, ‘Wow, OK.’ It was amazing because it [the Gay Games] has grown so much from 1987.

I mean there were 25,000 people there – not to mention the thousands and thousands of athletes that were competing there. It was amazing.
